On Sunday, an EF4 tornado that stretched almost a mile wide and that had winds clocking in at 170 miles per hour touched down in Lee County, Alabama.

There are 23 people who died as a result of the tornado with three children, who range in age from 6 to 10 years old, being amongst the dead.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones told AL. com that due to the devastation and the number of people who are “uncounted for,” he expects the total number of deaths to rise.

The deadly EF4 tornado that hit Lee County, Alabama, was part of a tornado outbreak that impacted three states Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

The Weather Channel reported that the EF4 tornado was the deadliest tornado to hit the country since May 20, 2013.
